What is the Generation Calculator?
The Generation Calculator instantly tells you which generational cohort you belong to based on the year you were born. Generations are groups of people born during the same era who share cultural touchstones, technology, and historical experiences. This tool uses widely accepted year ranges popularised by the Pew Research Center and demographers, so you can quickly identify whether you are a Baby Boomer, Generation X, Millennial, Generation Z, or Generation Alpha.
How to use it
Simply enter your four-digit birth year and the calculator returns your generation name, the birth-year range that defines it, and your approximate age in 2025. It works for anyone from the Silent Generation through Generation Alpha.
The generation ranges explained
The standard cut-offs are: Silent Generation (1928–1945), Baby Boomer (1946–1964), Generation X (1965–1980), Millennial / Gen Y (1981–1996), Generation Z (1997–2012), and Generation Alpha (2013 onward). These boundaries are conventions rather than fixed laws, so people born near a boundary year (sometimes called "cuspers") may identify with either neighbouring generation.
$$\text{Generation} = f\!\left(\text{Birth Year}\right), \quad \text{Age} = 2025 - \text{Birth Year}$$
Worked example
Suppose you were born in 1990. Since 1990 falls between 1981 and 1996, you are a Millennial. In 2025 you would be approximately $$2025 - 1990 = 35$$ years old.
FAQ
Why do generation ranges vary between sources? Generations are social constructs, so different researchers choose slightly different boundary years. We use the common Pew-style ranges.
What comes after Gen Alpha? The cohort born from roughly 2025 onward is being informally called Generation Beta.
Are cuspers a real thing? Yes — people born within a year or two of a boundary often share traits of both adjacent generations (e.g. "Xennials" between Gen X and Millennials).
