What Is the Zodiac Sign Calculator?
This calculator tells you your zodiac sun sign — the astrological sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. It uses the Western (tropical) zodiac, the system most commonly seen in horoscopes, dividing the year into twelve signs. Just enter your birth month and day and you'll instantly see your sign, its symbol, its element (Fire, Earth, Air or Water), and the date range it covers.
How to Use It
Select your birth month from the dropdown and type your birth day (1–31). The calculator converts your date into a numeric code and checks which sign's date range it falls into. You don't need your birth year — sun signs repeat the same calendar dates every year.
The Formula Explained
To make date comparisons simple, the tool encodes your birthday as code = month × 100 + day. For example, April 19 becomes \(4 \times 100 + 19 = 419\). Each sign has a start and end code; Aries runs from 321 (March 21) to 419 (April 19), so any code in that window returns Aries. Capricorn is special because it spans the New Year (Dec 22 – Jan 19), so the logic checks for codes ≥ 1222 or ≤ 119.
Worked Example
Suppose you were born on August 5. The code is \(8 \times 100 + 5 = 805\). That falls between 723 (July 23) and 822 (August 22), so your sun sign is Leo ♌, a Fire sign.
FAQ
Do I need my birth year? No. Sun signs are based only on month and day; the boundary dates are essentially the same every year (within a day for some years).
Why do some sites give slightly different cusp dates? The exact moment the Sun changes signs shifts by up to a day depending on the year and time zone. This calculator uses the widely accepted standard date ranges.
What if I'm born on a cusp? If your birthday lands on a boundary date, your sign is determined by the standard ranges shown here. For exact precision on a cusp day, an astrologer can calculate the Sun's position using your exact birth time.
