What Is a Bigha?
This tool applies to land measurement in India (and neighbouring South Asian countries). The Bigha is a traditional unit of land area whose size is not standardised — it varies significantly from state to state. Because of this, there is no single universal Bigha-to-square-feet number. A widely used "pakka" Bigha equals about 27,000 square feet, which is the default in this calculator, but you should always confirm the figure used in your specific district.
How to Use the Calculator
Enter the land area in Bigha, then choose your region's Bigha standard from the dropdown (or select Custom and type the exact square-feet value of one Bigha for your locality). The calculator multiplies the two and instantly shows the result in square feet, along with handy equivalents in acres and square meters.
The Formula Explained
The conversion is a simple multiplication: $$\text{ft}^2 = \text{Bigha} \times F$$ where F is the number of square feet in one Bigha for your region. The default uses \(F = 27{,}000\). To convert further, square feet are divided by 43,560 to get acres, or multiplied by 0.09290304 to get square meters.
Worked Example
Suppose you own 2.5 Bigha of land in a region where 1 Bigha = 27,000 ft². The area in square feet is $$2.5 \times 27{,}000 = 67{,}500 \text{ ft}^2$$ That equals \(67{,}500 \div 43{,}560 \approx 1.55\) acres, or about 6,270.95 m².
Bigha Conversion Factors by Indian State
The Bigha is not a standardized unit in India — its value varies widely by state, district and even between "pakka" (larger) and "kaccha" (smaller) variants. The table below lists commonly used conversion factors. Because local usage differs, always confirm the factor used in your specific revenue district before relying on a conversion. Acre and square-meter equivalents are derived using \(1\ \text{acre} = 43{,}560\ \text{ft}^2\) and \(1\ \text{ft}^2 = 0.092903\ \text{m}^2\).
| State / Region | Square Feet per Bigha | Acres per Bigha | Square Meters per Bigha |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh (Pakka Bigha) | 27,000 | 0.6198 | 2,508.4 |
| Uttar Pradesh (Kaccha Bigha) | 9,000 | 0.2066 | 836.1 |
| West Bengal | 14,400 | 0.3306 | 1,337.8 |
| Rajasthan (Pakka Bigha) | 27,225 | 0.6250 | 2,529.3 |
| Rajasthan (Kaccha Bigha) | 17,424 | 0.4000 | 1,618.7 |
| Bihar | 27,220 | 0.6249 | 2,528.8 |
| Assam | 14,400 | 0.3306 | 1,337.8 |
| Madhya Pradesh | 12,000 | 0.2755 | 1,114.8 |
| Punjab / Haryana | 9,070 | 0.2082 | 842.6 |
| Gujarat | 17,427 | 0.4001 | 1,619.0 |
| Uttarakhand | 6,804 | 0.1562 | 632.1 |
| Himachal Pradesh | 8,712 | 0.2000 | 809.4 |
Note: Local district conventions can deviate from these figures. The 27,000 ft² value (often called the "pakka Bigha") is used as the calculator's default but is by no means universal.
FAQ
Why does the Bigha value differ by region? The Bigha evolved locally over centuries, so states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Bihar and Assam each use different conversions. Always use the local standard.
Is 27,000 ft² always correct? No. It is a common "pakka Bigha" value but many areas use 14,400 ft², 17,424 ft² or other figures. Use the Custom option for exact local values.
Can I convert square feet back to Bigha? Yes — divide the square footage by the same regional factor \(F\).
