What it does
This calculator finds the area of a rectangle in square feet by multiplying its length by its width. It is handy for flooring, painting, landscaping, carpet, tile, and any project where you need to know how much surface a rectangular space covers.
How to use it
Enter the length and width of the rectangle in feet. The calculator multiplies them and shows the area in square feet, then automatically converts that value to square yards and square meters so you can match it to whatever your materials are sold in.
The formula explained
The area of a rectangle is simply length times width: \(A = L \times W\). When both measurements are in feet, the result is in square feet. To convert to square yards, divide by 9 (because a yard is 3 feet, and \(3 \times 3 = 9\)). To convert to square meters, multiply by 0.09290304.
Worked example
For a room that is 12 ft long and 10 ft wide: $$\text{Area} = 12 \times 10 = 120 \text{ square feet}.$$ That equals \(120 \div 9 \approx 13.33\) square yards, or \(120 \times 0.09290304 \approx 11.15\) square meters.
FAQ
What if my measurements are in inches? Divide each measurement by 12 to convert it to feet before entering, or measure again in feet.
Can I use this for non-rectangular shapes? No — this formula only applies to rectangles (and squares, which are a special case). For other shapes use a dedicated area formula.
Why convert to square yards? Carpet and some flooring are priced per square yard, so the conversion helps you order the right amount.
