What Is the Oscar Marathon Calculator?
Every awards season, film fans take on the challenge of watching all the Best Picture nominees before the ceremony. The Oscar Marathon Calculator estimates exactly how long that binge will take — combining each film's runtime with the short breaks you need between movies. Although it's named for the Oscars, it works for any film festival, franchise rewatch, or movie night planning.
How to Use It
Enter three numbers: the number of films you plan to watch, the average runtime in minutes, and the break time you want between each film for snacks, stretching, or discussion. The calculator returns the total time in hours, plus a breakdown of viewing time versus break time.
The Formula Explained
The total time is the sum of all viewing time and all breaks:
$$\text{Total} = (n \times r) + (n - 1) \times b$$
Here n is the number of films, r is the average runtime, and b is the break length. Note that with n films there are only \(n - 1\) breaks (you don't need a break after the last film), which is why we multiply the break time by one less than the film count.
Worked Example
Suppose there are 10 nominated films averaging 130 minutes each, and you want a 15-minute break between them. Viewing time is \(10 \times 130 = 1{,}300\) minutes. Breaks total \((10 - 1) \times 15 = 135\) minutes. The grand total is \(1{,}300 + 135 = 1{,}435\) minutes, or about 23.9 hours — nearly a full day of cinema!
FAQ
Why is it films minus one breaks? You only need a break between films, not after the final one, so 10 films have 9 breaks.
Can I use it for a single film? Yes — with 1 film there are no breaks, so the total simply equals the runtime.
Should I add time for meals or sleep? This tool counts only films and short breaks. For a multi-day marathon, increase the break time or split your plan across sessions.
