What This Calculator Does

This Tip Percentage Calculator works backward from the numbers you already know. Instead of choosing a tip rate and computing the dollar amount, you enter the bill amount and the tip you actually gave, and it tells you the exact percentage that tip represents. It's handy for checking whether you over- or under-tipped, reviewing a receipt, or splitting feedback on service quality.

How to Use It

Enter two values: the bill amount (before tip) and the tip amount you paid. The calculator instantly returns the tip percentage, repeats your tip amount, and shows the combined total you spent. All amounts use the same currency, so the result is currency-neutral.

The Formula Explained

The calculation is a simple proportion. Divide the tip by the bill, then multiply by 100 to convert the decimal into a percentage:

$$\text{tip\%} = \frac{\text{tip\_amount}}{\text{bill}} \times 100$$

For example, a $9 tip on a $50 bill is \(9 \div 50 = 0.18\), and \(0.18 \times 100 = 18\%\).

Tip percentage equals the tip amount divided by the bill, multiplied by 100.

Worked Example

Suppose your meal cost $50 and you left a $9 tip. The tip percentage is $$(9 / 50) \times 100 = 18\%.$$ Your total paid is \(50 + 9 = 59\) $59. A solid, standard tip for good service.

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Customarily, tips are based on the pre-tax bill, but many people simply tip on the total. Enter whichever bill figure you used.

What's a normal tip percentage? In the US, 15–20% is typical for restaurant service, with 18% being a common middle ground. Norms vary widely by country.

Why is my percentage so high or low? Double-check that the bill amount excludes the tip itself; including the tip in the bill will understate the true tip rate.
