What This Calculator Does

The Tip Percentage Per Person Calculator takes a restaurant or service bill, adds a tip based on the percentage you choose, and splits the grand total evenly among everyone at the table. Instead of doing mental math while the server waits, you get an instant, accurate amount each person owes — tip included.

Bill plus tip split evenly among three people
The calculator adds the tip to the bill, then divides the total equally per person.

How to Use It

Enter three values: the bill amount before tip, the tip percentage you want to leave (15–20% is common in the US), and the number of people sharing the cost. The calculator returns the per-person share, the total tip in dollars, and the full bill including tip.

The Formula Explained

First the bill is grown by the tip rate: multiplying by \(1 + \text{Tip \%} / 100\) adds the tip on top of the original amount. That grand total is then divided by the number of people to get each share:

$$\text{Per Person} = \frac{\text{Bill} \times \left(1 + \dfrac{\text{Tip \%}}{100}\right)}{\text{People}}$$

The standalone tip amount is simply \(\text{Bill} \times \text{Tip \%} / 100\).

Per-person cost equals the tip-inclusive total divided by the number of people.

Worked Example

Suppose a dinner costs $60, you leave an 18% tip, and 3 people are splitting it. The total with tip is \(60 \times 1.18 = \$70.80\). The tip alone is \(60 \times 0.18 = \$10.80\). Divided three ways, each person pays \(70.80 / 3 = \$23.60\):

$$\frac{60 \times \left(1 + \dfrac{18}{100}\right)}{3} = 23.60$$

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Etiquette generally suggests tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the full total for simplicity. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer.

What tip percentage is standard? In the US, 15% is the lower end for adequate service, 18–20% is typical for good service, and 20%+ rewards excellent service.

Does this handle uneven splits? This tool splits the total evenly. For uneven shares, calculate each person's portion of the bill separately and apply the tip rate to each.
