What This Tip Calculator Does
This tip calculator works out the gratuity to leave on a restaurant bill, the full total you will pay, and—if you are dining in a group—how much each person owes. It is pure arithmetic, so the math applies everywhere, even though customary tipping rates differ from country to country. Enter the pre-tip bill, choose a tip percentage, and tell it how many people are splitting the check.
How To Use It
Type the Bill Amount (the check total before tip), set the Tip Percentage (common choices are 10, 15, 18, 20 or 25 percent), and enter the Number of People sharing the cost. The calculator instantly shows the tip, the grand total, and both figures divided per person. If you are paying alone, leave the people field at 1.
The Formula Explained
The tip is the bill times the tip rate expressed as a fraction: $$\text{Tip} = \text{Bill} \times \frac{\text{Tip\%}}{100}$$ The total is simply \(\text{Bill} + \text{Tip}\). To split, divide each figure by the number of people: $$\text{Tip Per Person} = \frac{\text{Tip}}{\text{People}}$$ and $$\text{Total Per Person} = \frac{\text{Total}}{\text{People}}$$ Calculations are carried at full precision and only the displayed amounts are rounded to the nearest cent.
Worked Example
Suppose the bill is $50.00, you want to tip 18%, and four people are splitting it. The tip is $$50.00 \times 0.18 = \$9.00$$ so the total is $59.00. Divided four ways, that is $2.25 tip and $14.75 total per person.
FAQ
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Customs vary; many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Enter whichever bill figure you prefer to tip on.
What is a standard tip percentage? In the United States, 15-20% is typical for sit-down service. Other countries tip less or include service automatically—check your local norm.
How does it avoid dividing by zero? If the number of people is blank or less than 1, it is treated as 1 person so the split is always valid.
