What this calculator does
This Tip and Bill Split Calculator works out three things at once: the tip amount you should add to a bill, the grand total (bill plus tip), and how much each person owes when the total is split evenly. It is handy at restaurants, cafes, bars, and for service charges generally. While tipping customs vary by country (around 15-20% is common in the United States, while in many countries tipping is optional or already included), the math is universal — the tool simply applies whatever rate you enter to whatever currency you are using.
How to use it
Enter the Bill Amount (the pre-tip charge), the Tip Rate as a percentage, and the Number of People sharing the cost. Leave the number of people at 1 if you are paying alone. The calculator instantly shows the tip, the total, the amount each person pays, and the tip share per person.
The formula explained
The tip is the bill multiplied by the rate as a fraction: \(\text{Tip} = \text{Bill} \times \frac{\text{TipRate}}{100}\). The total is simply \(\text{Bill} + \text{Tip}\), which is the same as \(\text{Bill} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{TipRate}}{100}\right)\). To split the check, divide the total by the number of people:
$$\text{Per Person} = \frac{\text{Bill} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Tip Rate (\%)}}{100}\right)}{\text{People}}$$The per-person value is only meaningful for a positive whole number of people, so the calculator treats anything below 1 as a single payer.
Worked example
Suppose the bill is 27.52 and you want to leave a 15% tip for one person. The tip is
$$27.52 \times 0.15 = 4.128$$rounded to 4.13. The total is
$$27.52 + 4.128 = 31.648$$rounded to 31.65. With one person, each pays 31.65. If instead a 100 bill at 20% is split among 4 people, the tip is 20.00, the total is 120.00, and each person pays 30.00.
FAQ
Is the tip calculated before or after tax? This tool applies the tip to whatever bill amount you enter. If you prefer to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal as the bill amount.
What currency does it use? Any currency you like — there is no conversion. Outputs are in the same currency as your input.
What if the tip rate is 0? The tip becomes 0 and the total equals the bill, which is useful in places where tipping is not expected.
