What This Calculator Does
The Restaurant Tip & Bill Split Calculator helps you instantly figure out how much to tip and how to divide a bill evenly between everyone at the table. Whether you're dining out at home or traveling abroad, it removes the awkward mental math and ensures everyone pays their fair share — tip included.
How to Use It
Enter three values: the total bill amount, the tip percentage you'd like to leave, and the number of people sharing the cost. The calculator returns the total tip, the grand total, and exactly how much each person should pay. A typical tip in the United States is 15–20% of the pre-tax bill, while customs vary widely in other countries.
The Formula Explained
The math is straightforward. First, the tip is a fraction of the bill:
$$\text{Tip} = \text{Bill} \times \left(\frac{\text{Tip\%}}{100}\right)$$
Then the grand total adds the tip back onto the bill:
$$\text{Total} = \text{Bill} + \text{Tip}$$
Finally, the total is split evenly:
$$\text{Per Person} = \frac{\text{Total}}{\text{People}}$$
Worked Example
Suppose your bill is $80, you want to leave an 18% tip, and four people are splitting the cost. The tip is \(80 \times 0.18 = \$14.40\). The grand total is \(80 + 14.40 = \$94.40\). Divided among 4 people, each person pays \(\$94.40 \div 4 = \$23.60\), of which $3.60 is their share of the tip.
FAQ
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the full bill is also common and only adds a small amount. Enter whichever figure you prefer in the bill field.
How much should I tip? In the US, 15% is standard for adequate service, 18–20% for good service. In many European and Asian countries a service charge may already be included, so check the bill first.
Can I split the bill unevenly? This tool splits the total evenly. For uneven shares, calculate each person's items separately and apply the tip percentage to each.
