What is the Grocery Calculator?
The Grocery Calculator gives you a fast, realistic estimate of how much your household should expect to spend on food each week. It works by multiplying the number of people in your home by the average grocery cost per person per week. From that weekly figure it also projects your monthly and yearly food spending, helping you plan a household budget with confidence.
How to use it
Enter the number of people who eat at home regularly, then enter your estimated cost per person per week. If you are unsure, common ranges run from about $50 for a frugal eater to $100+ for a generous or specialty diet. Press calculate to see your weekly, monthly, and annual grocery budget.
The formula explained
The core calculation is simple: Weekly Budget = People × Cost per Person per Week.
$$\text{Weekly Budget} = \text{People} \times \text{Cost per Person per Week}$$To estimate monthly spending we multiply the weekly figure by 4.345, the average number of weeks in a calendar month (52 weeks ÷ 12 months). The annual estimate multiplies the weekly budget by 52.
$$\text{Monthly} = \text{Weekly} \times 4.345 \qquad \text{Annual} = \text{Weekly} \times 52$$
Worked example
Suppose a family of 4 spends about $75 per person each week. The weekly budget is
$$4 \times \$75 = \$300$$The monthly estimate is
$$\$300 \times 4.345 = \$1{,}303.50$$and the annual estimate is
$$\$300 \times 52 = \$15{,}600$$
FAQ
What's a typical cost per person? It varies widely by region and diet, but many households budget $60–$100 per person per week.
Why 4.345 weeks per month? A year has 52 weeks split across 12 months, which averages 4.345 weeks per month — more accurate than simply using 4.
Does this include eating out? No. This estimates grocery (at-home food) spending only. Add restaurant and takeout costs separately if you track total food expenses.
