What the Electricity Bill Calculator Does
This calculator estimates your electricity bill from four simple inputs: your monthly power usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh), your rate per kWh, a fixed basic (service) charge, and your tax rate as a percentage. It instantly shows your energy charge, the tax applied, and your total monthly bill — then breaks the total down into daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly figures so you can see costs over any time span. Currency is formatted to your locale, so it works whether you pay in dollars, pounds, euros, or rupees.
How to Use It
- Monthly Power Usage (kWh): Enter the total kilowatt-hours you use in a month — usually printed on your utility bill.
- Rate per kWh: The price your supplier charges for each unit of energy.
- Basic Charge: A fixed monthly service or connection fee that applies regardless of usage.
- Tax Rate (%): The sales tax, VAT, or utility tax applied to your charges.
The Formula Explained
The tool follows the standard utility billing structure:
- Energy Charge = Usage (kWh) × Rate per kWh
- Tax = (Basic Charge + Energy Charge) × (Tax Rate ÷ 100)
- Total Bill = Basic Charge + Energy Charge + Tax
Note that tax is applied to both the basic charge and the energy charge. The daily figure divides the total by 30, the weekly figure multiplies the daily figure by 7, and the yearly figure multiplies the monthly total by 12.
Worked Example
Suppose you use 500 kWh in a month at a rate of 0.15 per kWh, with a 10 basic charge and a 8% tax rate:
- Energy Charge = 500 × 0.15 = 75.00
- Tax = (10 + 75) × 0.08 = 6.80
- Total Bill = 10 + 75 + 6.80 = 91.80
That works out to about 3.06 per day, 21.42 per week, and 1,101.60 per year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the basic charge taxed? Yes. In this calculator, tax is applied to the sum of the basic charge and the energy charge, matching how many utilities bill customers.
Why does it divide by 30 for the daily cost? The tool assumes an average 30-day month to spread your total bill evenly across each day and week, giving a quick estimate rather than an exact calendar figure.
Can I use this for any currency? Yes. The results are formatted according to your locale, so the rate, basic charge, and totals display in your local currency.
