What this calculator does
This Pregnancy Test Timing Calculator helps you work out the earliest day you can take a home pregnancy test and get a reliable result, plus a rough estimate of how many weeks pregnant you might be. Home tests detect the hormone hCG, which only rises to a detectable level about two weeks after ovulation — testing too early often produces a false negative.
How to use it
Enter how many days have passed since you ovulated (or since your suspected ovulation/fertile window). Then enter how many days it has been since the first day of your last menstrual period. The calculator returns how many more days to wait until a reliable test and an estimate of your gestational age in weeks.
The formula explained
The earliest reliable test point is fixed at 14 days after ovulation. So $$\text{Days Until Test} = \max\!\left(0,\; 14 - \text{Days Since Ovulation}\right)$$ (clamped to zero once that window has passed). Gestational age in pregnancy is conventionally counted from the first day of the last period, so $$\text{Weeks Pregnant} = \frac{\text{Days Since Last Period}}{7}$$.
Worked example
Suppose you ovulated 10 days ago and your last period began 28 days ago. Days until a reliable test = $$14 - 10 = \textbf{4 days}.$$ Estimated weeks pregnant = $$28 \div 7 = \textbf{4 weeks}.$$
FAQ
Can I test before 14 days after ovulation? Some sensitive tests detect pregnancy a day or two earlier, but accuracy improves the longer you wait, ideally until the day of your expected period.
Why are weeks counted from my last period? Clinically, gestational age is measured from the last menstrual period because ovulation timing is harder to pinpoint exactly.
