What Is the Monthly Fuel Cost Calculator?
This calculator estimates how much you spend on fuel each month based on three simple inputs: how many miles you drive, your vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon (MPG), and the current price of fuel per gallon. It also shows the gallons of fuel you burn each month and projects your annual fuel spend, helping you budget and compare vehicles.
How to Use It
Enter your typical monthly driving distance in miles, your car's average MPG (check the dashboard trip computer or the EPA rating), and the price you pay per gallon. Click calculate to see your estimated monthly cost, gallons consumed, and yearly cost. Adjust the price field to see how rising or falling fuel prices affect your budget.
The Formula Explained
The math is straightforward. First, dividing your monthly miles by MPG gives the number of gallons consumed: \(\text{Gallons} = \text{Miles} \div \text{MPG}\). Multiplying gallons by the fuel price gives the cost:
$$\text{Monthly Cost} = \frac{\text{Distance (miles)}}{\text{MPG}} \times \text{Fuel Price}$$Because the units cancel cleanly, the result is in whatever currency your fuel price is quoted in.
Worked Example
Suppose you drive 1,000 miles a month, your car gets 25 MPG, and fuel costs $3.50 per gallon. Gallons used = $$1{,}000 \div 25 = 40 \text{ gallons}.$$ Monthly cost = $$40 \times \$3.50 = \$140.$$ Over a year that is $$\$140 \times 12 = \$1{,}680$$ in fuel.
FAQ
Does this work for liters and kilometers? The formula is unit-agnostic. If you enter kilometers, a km-per-liter economy value, and a per-liter price, the result is still correct in your currency.
Why does my real cost differ? Real-world MPG varies with traffic, terrain, weather, speed, and driving style, so treat the result as an estimate.
How can I lower my fuel cost? Drive fewer miles, maintain steady speeds, keep tires properly inflated, reduce idling, and consider a more fuel-efficient vehicle to raise your effective MPG.
