What Is the Trip Fuel Cost Calculator?

The Trip Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much you'll spend on gas (or any fuel) for a journey. By combining your trip distance, your vehicle's fuel economy, and the current fuel price, it tells you both the total cost and the amount of fuel you'll burn. It's perfect for budgeting a road trip, splitting costs with passengers, or comparing routes and vehicles.

How to Use It

Enter three values: the trip distance (in miles), your vehicle's fuel economy (miles per gallon), and the fuel price per gallon. The calculator divides distance by economy to find how many gallons you need, then multiplies by the price to get your total cost. Use consistent units — if you work in kilometres, litres and L/100km you can adapt the same logic, but this tool is set up for miles, MPG and price per gallon.

The Formula Explained

The math is simple: $$\text{Cost} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Fuel Economy}} \times \text{Fuel Price}$$ The first part, distance divided by miles-per-gallon, yields the number of gallons consumed. Multiplying that figure by the price per gallon gives the dollar (or local currency) cost. A higher MPG lowers your fuel use and cost, while longer distances and higher prices raise it.

Worked Example

Suppose you drive 300 miles in a car that gets 30 MPG, and gas costs $3.50 per gallon. First, \(300 \div 30 = 10\) gallons of fuel needed. Then $$10 \times \$3.50 = \$35.00$$ total fuel cost for the trip.

FAQ

Does this include tolls or wear-and-tear? No — it estimates fuel cost only. Add tolls, parking and maintenance separately for a full trip budget.

Can I use it for kilometres and litres? Yes, as long as your fuel economy and price use matching units (e.g. km, km/L and price per litre).

Why is my real cost different? Actual mileage varies with terrain, driving speed, traffic, load and weather, so treat the result as a solid estimate rather than an exact figure.
