What Is the Letter Grade to GPA Calculator?

This tool converts a single letter grade into its corresponding grade point value on the standard, unweighted 4.0 GPA scale used by most US high schools and colleges. Whether you earned an A-, a B+, or a C, you can instantly see what that grade is worth in GPA points.

How to Use It

Select your letter grade from the dropdown and the calculator displays the matching GPA point value. To compute a full GPA across multiple courses, convert each grade here, multiply each by the course's credit hours, sum the products, and divide by total credits.

The Conversion Formula

The standard 4.0 scale assigns these point values: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, and F = 0.0. Many schools cap A+ at 4.0 on an unweighted scale, which this calculator follows.

$$\text{GPA} = \operatorname{map}\left(\text{Letter Grade}\right)$$

Mapping of letter grades to GPA point values on a 4.0 scale
Each letter grade maps to a fixed GPA point value on the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

Worked Example

Suppose you received a B+ in a course. Looking it up on the scale, B+ corresponds to 3.3 grade points. If that course was worth 3 credit hours, it would contribute $$3.3 \times 3 = 9.9$$ quality points toward your cumulative GPA calculation.

FAQ

Is A+ worth more than 4.0? On an unweighted scale, no — A+ and A are both 4.0. Some weighted or honors scales award up to 4.3 for an A+, but the standard scale caps at 4.0.

Does this account for honors or AP courses? No. This is the unweighted scale. Weighted scales add 0.5 to 1.0 points for honors and AP/IB classes.

What scale does my school use? The 4.0 scale shown here is the most common, but always confirm with your institution's official grading policy, as cutoffs and plus/minus values can vary.
