What This Calculator Does

This calculator answers the everyday question: "What percentage is x of y?" Enter any two numbers and it instantly tells you what proportion the first value (x) represents of the second value (y). It works for test scores, budgets, sales figures, survey results, and any situation where you need to convert a raw count into a percentage.

How to Use It

Type the part or smaller amount into the Value (x) field, and the whole or total into the Total (y) field. The result shows x as a percentage of y. For example, if you scored 45 marks out of 60, enter 45 as x and 60 as y to see your percentage score.

The Formula Explained

The math is simple division scaled to 100:

$$\text{percent} = \frac{x}{y} \times 100$$

Dividing x by y gives the fraction of the whole, and multiplying by 100 converts that fraction into a percentage. If y is zero the percentage is undefined, so the calculator returns 0 to avoid dividing by zero.

Visual breakdown of the percent equals x over y times 100 formula
percent = (x ÷ y) × 100 shown as a simple visual.

Worked Example

Suppose 25 out of 200 customers signed up for a newsletter. Then $$\text{percent} = \frac{25}{200} \times 100 = 0.125 \times 100 = 12.5\%.$$ So 25 is 12.5% of 200.

FAQ

Can x be larger than y? Yes. If x is greater than y, the result will be over 100% (for example 150 is 300% of 50).

Does it work with decimals? Absolutely — both x and y can include decimal values such as 12.5 or 3.75.

What if y is 0? Division by zero is undefined, so the calculator safely returns 0% in that case.
