What This Calculator Does
Chocolate is toxic to cats because it contains theobromine, a methylxanthine that cats metabolize very slowly. While cats rarely seek out chocolate the way dogs do, accidental ingestion still happens. This Cat Chocolate Toxicity Calculator estimates how much theobromine your cat may have eaten and compares it to a commonly cited toxic threshold so you can gauge urgency. It is an educational estimate, not a diagnosis.
How to Use It
Enter your cat's weight in kilograms, the amount of chocolate eaten in grams, and the type of chocolate. Different chocolates carry very different theobromine loads — white chocolate has almost none, while baking chocolate and cocoa powder are extremely concentrated. The calculator returns total theobromine in milligrams, the dose per kilogram, and how that compares to the toxic threshold.
The Formula
The calculation is straightforward: $$\text{theobromine (mg)} = \text{chocolate (g)} \times \text{theobromine per gram}$$. The toxic reference threshold is $$\text{weight (kg)} \times 20 \text{ mg/kg}$$. Roughly, 20–40 mg/kg causes mild signs, 40–60 mg/kg moderate signs, and 60+ mg/kg severe, potentially life-threatening effects.
Worked Example
A 4 kg cat eats 10 g of milk chocolate (~2 mg/g). Theobromine = $$10 \times 2 = 20 \text{ mg}.$$ Toxic threshold = $$4 \times 20 = 80 \text{ mg}.$$ Dose per weight = \(20 \div 4 = 5\) mg/kg, which is only 25% of the toxic threshold — below the mild range, but still worth monitoring.
FAQ
Is any chocolate safe for cats? No. Even small amounts of dark or baking chocolate can be dangerous. There is no nutritional reason for a cat to eat chocolate.
What symptoms should I watch for? Vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, restlessness, rapid heart rate, tremors, and in severe cases seizures.
Should I call my vet even at low estimates? Yes — theobromine content varies and cats are sensitive. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian or a pet poison helpline immediately.
