What Is Cost Per Click (CPC)?

Cost Per Click (CPC) is one of the most widely used metrics in digital advertising. It tells you the average amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad. CPC is a universal marketing measure — it works the same way on Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, or any pay-per-click platform, and in any currency. Because the formula simply divides money by clicks, the result is expressed in whatever currency you entered for your spend.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your Total Ad Spend (the full amount you paid over the campaign period) and the Number of Clicks those ads received. Click calculate and you will get your average CPC in the same currency you used for spend. No currency conversion is applied — if you enter spend in dollars, the CPC is in dollars; if in yen, the CPC is in yen.

The Formula Explained

The calculation is straightforward:

$$\text{CPC} = \frac{\text{Total Ad Spend}}{\text{Number of Clicks}}$$

A lower CPC generally means you are acquiring traffic more efficiently, though the value of that traffic depends on conversion rates and revenue per visitor. CPC is often paired with CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) and CTR (click-through rate) for a fuller view of performance.

Worked Example

Suppose a campaign spent 120,000 over its run and generated 1,000 clicks. The CPC is $$120{,}000 / 1{,}000 = 120$$ per click. In a second case, a 5,000 budget that produced 2,500 clicks gives $$5{,}000 / 2{,}500 = 2.00$$ per click — a far more efficient outcome.

FAQ

What happens if clicks is zero? CPC is undefined when there are no clicks, because no clicks were paid for. The calculator returns 0 / no value in that case rather than dividing by zero.

What is a good CPC? It varies enormously by industry, platform, and keyword competition. Compare your CPC against your revenue per click — as long as each click earns more than it costs, the campaign can be profitable.

How many decimal places should CPC use? Two decimals is standard for most currencies. For currencies with no minor unit (such as yen), whole numbers are typical.
