What Is the Drywall Sheet Calculator?
The Drywall Sheet Calculator tells you how many sheets of drywall (also called gypsum board, plasterboard, or wallboard) you need to cover a given area of walls and ceilings. Instead of guessing at the lumber yard, you enter the total square footage you plan to cover, the dimensions of the sheets you are buying, and a waste allowance for cuts, mistakes, and odd corners. The tool returns the exact and rounded-up number of sheets so you can buy with confidence.
How to Use It
First, measure every wall and ceiling you intend to cover and add the areas together to get your total square footage (length \(\times\) height for walls, length \(\times\) width for ceilings). Enter that in Total Area. Next, set the Sheet Width and Sheet Length — the most common sheet in the US is 4 ft \(\times\) 8 ft, but 4 \(\times\) 10 and 4 \(\times\) 12 are also sold. Finally, choose a Waste Allowance; 10% is a good default for a straightforward room, and 15–20% is wiser for rooms with many windows, doors, or angles.
The Formula Explained
The calculation is simple: divide the total area by the area of one sheet to get the raw number of sheets, then multiply by (1 + waste%/100) to pad for offcuts. Because you cannot buy a fraction of a sheet, the result is rounded up to the next whole sheet.
$$\text{Sheets} = \left\lceil \frac{\text{Area}}{\text{Width} \times \text{Length}} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Waste \%}}{100}\right) \right\rceil$$
Worked example: Suppose you must cover 500 sq ft using 4 \(\times\) 8 sheets (32 sq ft each) with 10% waste. Raw sheets = \(500 \div 32 = 15.625\). With waste = \(15.625 \times 1.10 = 17.19\). Rounded up, you need 18 sheets, covering \(18 \times 32 = 576\) sq ft.
FAQ
Should I subtract doors and windows? For small openings it is often easier to leave them in as part of your waste buffer. For large openings, subtract them from your total area and keep a 10% waste allowance.
What waste percentage should I use? Use about 10% for simple rectangular rooms and 15–20% for complex layouts, vaulted ceilings, or if you are new to hanging drywall.
Does this include screws or joint compound? No — this calculator estimates sheets only. Plan separately for fasteners, tape, and mud based on the number of sheets and seams.
