What Is the Natural Gas Cost Calculator?

This calculator estimates how much your natural gas will cost based on the amount you use (measured in therms), the price your utility charges per therm, and any fixed monthly service charge. It works for any country or utility — just enter the price in your local currency and the result follows the same formula.

How to Use It

Read your gas usage in therms from your bill or meter, enter the price per therm your provider charges, and add the fixed monthly charge (service or delivery fee) if your utility lists one. The calculator instantly shows your usage cost and total estimated bill.

The Formula Explained

The cost is calculated as:

$$\text{Cost} = \text{Therms} \times \text{Price per Therm} + \text{Fixed Charge}$$

The therms multiplied by price gives the variable usage cost — what you pay for the energy you actually burned. The fixed charge is a flat fee many utilities add regardless of usage. One therm equals about 100,000 BTU, roughly 29.3 kWh of energy.

The natural gas bill formula: usage times price per therm plus a fixed monthly charge.

Worked Example

Suppose you used 50 therms in a month, your utility charges $1.20 per therm, and there is a $10 fixed monthly charge. Usage cost = \(50 \times \$1.20 = \$60.00\). Total:

$$\$60.00 + \$10.00 = \mathbf{\$70.00}$$

A worked example: the variable usage cost stacks on top of the fixed charge to form the total bill.

FAQ

What is a therm? A therm is a unit of heat energy equal to 100,000 BTU. Gas bills in the US and UK are often expressed in therms.

How do I convert CCF or cubic feet to therms? Multiply your CCF (hundred cubic feet) by your utility's heating value (typically about 1.03) to get therms.

Why include a fixed charge? Many utilities bill a flat monthly service or delivery fee on top of the per-therm rate. Setting it to 0 gives just the usage cost.
