What is the Area Conversion Calculator?

This tool converts an area measurement from one unit to another — for example square meters to square feet, hectares to acres, or square miles to square kilometers. It supports nine common metric and imperial area units and uses exact internationally agreed conversion factors, so the result is accurate for engineering, real estate, land surveying, gardening, and schoolwork alike.

How to use it

Enter the area value you want to convert, pick the unit you are converting from, then pick the unit you are converting to. The calculator shows the converted value plus the equivalent in square meters so you can sanity-check the result. Both fields can be set to the same unit (the value passes through unchanged).

The formula explained

Every supported unit is stored as a factor that says how many square meters it represents. A square foot is 0.09290304 m², an acre is 4046.8564224 m², a hectare is 10,000 m², and so on. To convert, the calculator first turns your value into square meters by multiplying by the source factor, then divides by the target factor:

$$A_{out} = A_{in} \times \frac{f_{in}}{f_{out}}$$

Worked example

Convert 50 square meters to square feet. The factor for m² is 1 and for ft² is 0.09290304. So $$A = 50 \times \frac{1}{0.09290304} = 50 \times 10.7639 \approx 538.196 \text{ ft}^2.$$ 538.196 ft².

Area Unit Conversion Table

The table below shows what one unit of each common area measure equals in the other key units. Every conversion is computed by first converting the input value to square metres (using its exact factor) and then dividing by the target unit's factor.

1 unit = m² = ft² = in² = yd² = acres = hectares
1 m² 1 10.76391 1550.0031 1.195990 0.00024711 0.0001
1 cm² 0.0001 0.00107639 0.1550003 0.000119599 2.471×10⁻⁸ 1×10⁻⁸
1 ft² 0.09290304 1 144 0.111111 0.00002296 9.2903×10⁻⁶
1 in² 0.00064516 0.00694444 1 0.000771605 1.594×10⁻⁷ 6.4516×10⁻⁸
1 yd² 0.83612736 9 1296 1 0.000206612 0.0000836127
1 mi² 2,589,988.11 27,878,400 — 3,097,600 640 258.99881
1 hectare 10,000 107,639.1 15,500,031 11,959.90 2.471054 1
1 acre 4046.856422 43,560 6,272,640 4840 1 0.404686
1 km² 1,000,000 10,763,910 — 1,195,990 247.1054 100

Two often-used relationships fall straight out of the definitions: 1 km² = 100 ha = 0.386102 mi², and 1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 0.404686 ha.

Exact Conversion Factors (m²)

This converter stores each unit as a single factor: the number of square metres in one of that unit. To convert, multiply by the source factor and divide by the target factor, i.e. \(\text{Result} = \text{Value} \times \frac{\text{From Factor}}{\text{To Factor}}\). The factors below follow from the international definitions of the foot (exactly 0.3048 m, set in 1959) and the metric land units, so most are exact by definition.

Unit Factor (m² per unit) Basis Exact?
Square centimetre (cm²) 0.0001 (0.01 m)² Exact
Square inch (in²) 0.00064516 (0.0254 m)² Exact
Square foot (ft²) 0.09290304 (0.3048 m)² Exact
Square yard (yd²) 0.83612736 (0.9144 m)² = 9 ft² Exact
Square metre (m²) 1 SI base of area Exact (reference)
Acre 4046.8564224 43,560 ft² = 4840 yd² Exact
Hectare (ha) 10,000 (100 m)² Exact
Square mile (mi²) 2,589,988.110336 640 acres = (1609.344 m)² Exact
Square kilometre (km²) 1,000,000 (1000 m)² Exact

Because the 1959 international yard and foot are defined as exact metric values, all of the imperial factors above are exact—there is no rounding hidden in them. (The older U.S. survey foot, 1200/3937 m, differs by about 2 parts per million and gives a survey acre of roughly 4046.873 m²; for everyday work the international values shown here apply.) The square inch is unusual in that it does not divide evenly into the square mile, so those two cells are left blank in the table above rather than shown with misleading precision.

FAQ

How many square feet are in a square meter? Approximately 10.7639 ft².

How big is a hectare in acres? One hectare equals about 2.4711 acres (\(10{,}000 \div 4046.8564224\)).

Is an acre the same as a square mile? No — there are exactly 640 acres in one square mile.
