Day 1 Loading Dose (0.2 mg/kg)
4 mg
≈ 2.67 mL of suspension
Body weight 20 kg
Day 1 loading dose (0.2 mg/kg) 4 mg (2.67 mL)
Daily maintenance dose (0.1 mg/kg) 2 mg (1.33 mL)

For dogs only — never give meloxicam formulated for dogs to cats. This is an educational estimate. Always confirm the exact dose and concentration with your veterinarian before administering any medication.

What this calculator does

This tool estimates a Metacam (meloxicam) dose for dogs based on body weight. Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation from osteoarthritis and after surgery. The standard canine oral protocol uses a higher loading dose on the first day followed by a lower once-daily maintenance dose. This calculator is general veterinary guidance and is not country-specific, but dosing must always be confirmed with your own vet.

How to use it

Enter your dog's weight and choose kilograms or pounds (pounds are converted using \(1\ \text{lb} = 0.45359237\ \text{kg}\)). Select the oral-suspension concentration — the common canine product is 1.5 mg/mL. The calculator returns the day-1 loading dose and the daily maintenance dose, each shown in both milligrams and millilitres of suspension.

The formula explained

The dose is linear in body weight:

$$\text{Loading dose} = 0.2\ \text{mg/kg} \times \text{weight}$$ (given once, on day 1)
$$\text{Maintenance dose} = 0.1\ \text{mg/kg} \times \text{weight}$$ (once daily thereafter)

To convert milligrams to a liquid volume, divide by the concentration: \(\text{mL} = \text{mg} \div (\text{mg/mL})\).

Diagram showing day 1 loading dose at 0.2 mg per kg and following days maintenance dose at 0.1 mg per kg for a dog
Metacam uses a higher loading dose on day 1, then a halved maintenance dose on following days.

Worked example

For a 20 kg dog using 1.5 mg/mL suspension:

$$\text{Loading} = 0.2 \times 20 = 4\ \text{mg} \rightarrow 4 \div 1.5 = 2.67\ \text{mL}$$ on day 1.
$$\text{Maintenance} = 0.1 \times 20 = 2\ \text{mg} \rightarrow 2 \div 1.5 = 1.33\ \text{mL}$$ once daily.

FAQ

Can I give dog Metacam to my cat? No. Cat dosing is completely different and the canine concentration can be dangerous for cats. Use a cat-specific product and dose only.

Should Metacam be given with food? The oral suspension is usually given with or after food to reduce stomach upset. Follow your vet's instructions.

What if I miss the loading dose? Do not double up. Contact your veterinarian for guidance; never exceed the prescribed daily dose, as NSAID overdoses can cause serious kidney and gastrointestinal harm.
