What Is the Grade Needed for an A Calculator?

This tool tells you the exact score you must earn on your final exam to reach a target overall grade — whether that's an A (often 90%) or any other goal. It works by accounting for the grade you've already accumulated and how much the final is worth in your course.

How to Use It

Enter three values: your current grade (your average so far on everything except the final), your target grade (the overall percentage you want), and the final exam weight (the percentage of your total grade the final counts for). The calculator returns the minimum score needed on the final.

The Formula Explained

The math splits your grade into two parts: the work already done and the final. If the final is worth a fraction w (weight ÷ 100), then your existing work counts for \((1 - w)\). The score you need is:

$$\text{Needed} = \dfrac{\text{Target} - \text{Current} \times (1 - w)}{w}$$

The numerator is the "gap" your final must cover; dividing by the weight scales it up because only part of your grade comes from the final.

The final grade splits into your current grade (weight \(1-w\)) and the final exam (weight \(w\)).

Worked Example

Suppose your current grade is 85%, you want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 20% (\(w = 0.20\)). Then:

$$\text{Needed} = \frac{90 - 85 \times 0.80}{0.20} = \frac{90 - 68}{0.20} = \frac{22}{0.20} = \mathbf{110\%}$$

Since 110% is above 100%, reaching exactly a 90 isn't possible (unless extra credit exists) — but you'd score very high.

FAQ

What if the result is over 100%? It means your target isn't achievable with a normal final alone — you'd need extra credit or a lower target.

What if it's negative or zero? You've already secured your target; even a 0 on the final keeps you at or above your goal.

What counts as the "current grade"? Your weighted average on all graded work excluding the final.
