What is engagement rate?
Engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with a post or account. Instead of looking at raw likes, it expresses interactions as a percentage of your follower base (or reach), so you can compare posts and accounts of very different sizes on a level playing field. It is the single most-watched health metric for creators, brands and marketers across Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.
How to use this calculator
Enter the number of likes, comments and shares a post received, then enter your follower count (or the post's reach if you prefer a reach-based rate). The calculator adds the three interaction types together, divides by your audience size and multiplies by 100 to give a clean percentage. The result table also shows your total interactions so you can sanity-check the inputs.
The formula explained
The formula is $$\text{Engagement \%} = \frac{\text{Likes} + \text{Comments} + \text{Shares}}{\text{Followers}} \times 100$$ The numerator captures every meaningful action a viewer took; the denominator normalizes for audience size. Using followers gives a per-follower rate, while using reach gives a per-impression rate — both are valid, just be consistent when comparing.
Worked example
A post earns 500 likes, 80 comments and 20 shares from an account with 10,000 followers. Total interactions = \(500 + 80 + 20 = 600\). Engagement rate = $$\frac{600}{10{,}000} \times 100 = 6\%$$ which is an excellent result — most accounts land between 1% and 5%.
FAQ
What is a good engagement rate? Roughly 1–3% is average, 3–6% is strong, and above 6% is excellent, though benchmarks vary by platform and follower count.
Should I use followers or reach? Followers gives a stable account-level metric; reach gives a truer measure of how the people who actually saw the post responded. Smaller accounts often report by reach.
Why is my small account's rate higher? Smaller, more niche audiences typically interact more, so micro-influencers often show higher engagement rates than large accounts.
