What is the IELTS to TOEFL Conversion Calculator?
The IELTS to TOEFL Conversion Calculator estimates an equivalent TOEFL iBT total score from a given IELTS band score. Both IELTS and TOEFL measure English-language proficiency, but they use very different scales — IELTS runs from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, while the TOEFL iBT ranges from 0 to 120. ETS (the maker of TOEFL) publishes an official concordance table linking the two, and this tool applies that mapping.
How to Use It
Enter your IELTS band score (for example 6.5, 7.0, or 8.0) and the calculator returns the matching TOEFL iBT total and the official score range for that band. This is useful when a university lists its admission threshold in only one of the two tests, or when you want to compare scores across applications.
The Formula Explained
There is no single linear equation between the two tests; instead ETS provides a piecewise concordance. Each IELTS band corresponds to a TOEFL iBT range, and we report the midpoint as a point estimate. Key mappings include: IELTS 6.0 → 60–78, 6.5 → 79–93, 7.0 → 94–101, 7.5 → 102–109, 8.0 → 110–114, and 8.5 → 115–117.
$$\text{TOEFL} = f\!\left(\text{IELTS Band}\right) = \begin{cases} 119 & \text{IELTS} \ge 9.0 \\ 116 & \text{IELTS} \ge 8.5 \\ 111 & \text{IELTS} \ge 8.0 \\ 105 & \text{IELTS} \ge 7.5 \\ 96 & \text{IELTS} \ge 7.0 \\ 84 & \text{IELTS} \ge 6.5 \\ 67 & \text{IELTS} \ge 6.0 \\ 53 & \text{IELTS} \ge 5.5 \\ 41 & \text{IELTS} \ge 5.0 \\ 31 & \text{IELTS} \ge 4.5 \\ 0 & \text{otherwise} \end{cases}$$
Worked Example
Suppose you scored IELTS 7.0. The concordance places that in the TOEFL iBT 94–101 range. The calculator reports a point estimate of about 96 with the range 94–101 shown alongside, so you can see both the single number and the spread.
$$\text{IELTS} = 7.0 \;\Rightarrow\; \text{TOEFL} = 96 \quad (94\text{–}101)$$
FAQ
Is this an exact conversion? No. The tests assess different skills, so any conversion is an approximation. Always check the exact requirement an institution states.
Which direction does it convert? This version converts IELTS → TOEFL iBT total.
What about decimals like 6.7? IELTS reports in 0.5 steps, so non-standard values are rounded down to the nearest valid band for mapping.
