What Is the Height in Inches Calculator?
This tool converts a height expressed in feet and inches into a single total in inches. Heights are commonly written in mixed units like 5'9", but many forms, fitness charts, and medical records ask for height as a total number of inches. This calculator handles that conversion in one step and also shows the equivalent in centimeters.
How to Use It
Enter the number of whole feet in the first box and the remaining inches in the second box. Inches can include a decimal (for example 9.5). Click calculate and you will see the total height in inches, along with the metric equivalent in centimeters.
The Formula Explained
Because there are 12 inches in one foot, you multiply the feet value by 12 and then add any extra inches:
$$\text{total inches} = \text{feet} \times 12 + \text{inches}$$
To convert to centimeters, multiply the total inches by 2.54, since one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm.
Worked Example
Suppose your height is 5 feet 9 inches. Multiply the feet: \(5 \times 12 = 60\) inches. Add the extra inches: \(60 + 9 = 69\) inches. In centimeters that is \(69 \times 2.54 = 175.26\) cm.
FAQ
Why convert height to inches? Many BMI tools, sports rosters, and US forms request height as a single inch value rather than feet and inches.
Can I enter a fractional inch? Yes. The inches field accepts decimals, so you can enter 9.5 for nine and a half inches.
How many inches is 6 feet? Six feet equals \(6 \times 12 = 72\) inches.
