What Is the Reading Time Calculator?
The Reading Time Calculator estimates how long it will take to read a piece of text based on its word count and your reading speed. It is a universal tool useful for writers, students, bloggers, presenters, and anyone planning content. Many publications display a "5 min read" badge — this calculator is how those numbers are produced.
How to Use It
Enter the total word count of your text and your reading speed in words per minute (WPM). The average adult reads silently at roughly 200–250 WPM, while reading aloud is closer to 130–150 WPM. The result shows the estimated time both as a decimal number of minutes and as minutes and seconds.
The Formula Explained
The calculation is simple division:
$$\text{Minutes} = \frac{\text{Word Count}}{\text{Reading Speed (WPM)}}$$
To split the decimal result into minutes and seconds, the whole-number part becomes minutes, and the leftover fraction is multiplied by 60 to get seconds.
Worked Example
Suppose an article has 1,500 words and you read at 250 WPM. Reading time = \(1{,}500 \div 250 = 6\) minutes exactly. If instead the article had 1,600 words at 250 WPM, that is 6.4 minutes — 6 minutes and \(0.4 \times 60 = 24\) seconds.
FAQ
What is a typical reading speed? Most adults read 200–250 WPM silently. Skimming can exceed 400 WPM, while careful technical reading may drop below 150 WPM.
Does this work for reading aloud? Yes — use a slower speed (around 130–150 WPM) to estimate spoken or presentation time.
How accurate is the estimate? It is an average estimate. Difficult vocabulary, comprehension needs, and breaks can all increase actual reading time.
