What Is a 15% Tip Calculator?

A 15% tip is a common standard for tipping at restaurants, cafes, and for many service jobs. This calculator removes the mental math: enter your bill amount and instantly see the tip, the new total, and (if you are dining with others) how much each person owes.

How to Use It

Type in your pre-tip bill amount. If you want to split the check, set the number of people. The calculator shows the 15% tip, the total including tip, and the amount each person pays.

The Formula

The math is simple percentage multiplication. The tip is 15% of the bill, and the total adds that tip back on:

$$\text{Tip} = \text{Bill} \times 0.15$$ and $$\text{Total} = \text{Bill} \times 1.15$$. To split, divide the total by the number of people: $$\text{Per Person} = \text{Total} \div \text{People}$$.

A 15% tip is added to the bill to make the total (115% of the bill).

Worked Example

Suppose your bill is $50.00. The tip is \(50 \times 0.15 = \$7.50\). The total is \(50 \times 1.15 = \$57.50\). If you split it between 2 people, each pays \(57.50 \div 2 = \$28.75\).

Tip Amounts at 15% for Common Bill Totals

A 15% tip is a common standard for adequate, satisfactory table service in the United States. To find it, multiply the bill by 0.15; the total you pay is the bill plus the tip, or equivalently \(1.15 \times \text{Bill}\).

Bill 15% Tip Total (115%)
$10.00 $1.50 $11.50
$20.00 $3.00 $23.00
$30.00 $4.50 $34.50
$50.00 $7.50 $57.50
$75.00 $11.25 $86.25
$100.00 $15.00 $115.00
$150.00 $22.50 $172.50
$200.00 $30.00 $230.00

For a $100 bill, the tip is \(0.15 \times 100 = \$15.00\) and the total is \(1.15 \times 100 = \$115.00\). A handy mental shortcut for 15%: take 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left) then add half of that amount.

FAQ

Is 15% a good tip? In the United States, 15% is generally considered a standard tip for acceptable service, while 18-20% is common for good service.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator applies 15% to whatever bill amount you enter, so enter the subtotal if you prefer to tip before tax.

How does the bill split work? The total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people, giving each person an equal share.
