What This Calculator Does
The Points-Based Grade Percentage Calculator converts a raw score — the number of points you earned out of the total points possible — into a percentage grade and an estimated letter grade. It is ideal for students, teachers, and tutors who need a fast, accurate way to score a test, quiz, assignment, or final exam without doing the division by hand.
How to Use It
Enter the points earned (your score) and the points possible (the maximum available). Click calculate to see your percentage and the corresponding letter grade. Both fields accept decimals, so partial-credit scores like 87.5 work perfectly.
The Formula Explained
The math is simple proportion. Divide what you earned by what was available, then multiply by 100 to express it as a percent:
$$\text{Grade \%} = \frac{\text{Points Earned}}{\text{Points Possible}} \times 100$$
The letter grade uses a standard US scale: 90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, 70–79 = C, 60–69 = D, below 60 = F. Your school's exact cutoffs may differ slightly.
Worked Example
Suppose you scored 45 points on a test worth 50 points. $$\text{Grade \%} = (45 \div 50) \times 100 = 0.9 \times 100 = \textbf{90\%},$$ which is an A.
FAQ
What if extra credit pushes me above 100%? The calculator will report the true percentage (e.g. 105%) even if it exceeds 100, which is correct for bonus points.
Can I use decimal points? Yes — enter fractional scores like 23.5 for half-point credit.
Why does my letter grade differ from class? Letter cutoffs vary by institution. This tool uses the common 90/80/70/60 scale; adjust mentally if your syllabus uses +/- grading or different thresholds.
