What This Calculator Does

The Percentage to Letter Grade Calculator converts a numeric percentage score (0–100) into the corresponding letter grade — A, B, C, D, or F — using the widely used 10-point grading scale common in U.S. schools and universities. It also shows the equivalent grade point on a 4.0 GPA scale, making it easy to translate a single test or assignment score into a familiar grade.

How To Use It

Enter your percentage score in the input box and submit. For example, type 85 if you earned 85% on an exam. The calculator instantly returns the letter grade and its GPA equivalent. Scores can include decimals (e.g. 89.5), which is useful when you are checking whether a borderline score rounds into the next grade band.

The Formula Explained

The conversion uses simple threshold mapping. The calculator compares your score against fixed cutoffs from highest to lowest:

$$\text{Grade} = \begin{cases} \text{A} & \text{Score} \geq 90 \\ \text{B} & 80 \leq \text{Score} < 90 \\ \text{C} & 70 \leq \text{Score} < 80 \\ \text{D} & 60 \leq \text{Score} < 70 \\ \text{F} & \text{Score} < 60 \end{cases}$$

A for 90 and above, B for 80–89.99, C for 70–79.99, D for 60–69.99, and F for anything below 60. Each letter then maps to a grade point: \(\text{A} = 4.0\), \(\text{B} = 3.0\), \(\text{C} = 2.0\), \(\text{D} = 1.0\), \(\text{F} = 0.0\).

The 10-point scale maps each percentage range to a letter grade.

Worked Example

Suppose you scored 72% on a final exam. Since \(72\) is at least \(70\) but less than \(80\), it falls in the C band, giving a letter grade of C and a GPA equivalent of 2.0. A score of 89.9% would still be a B (just shy of the 90 cutoff for an A).

FAQ

Does this use a plus/minus scale? No. This tool uses the basic 10-point scale without +/− modifiers, so each 10-point band returns a single letter.

Is 60% passing? On this scale, 60% earns a D, which is typically the lowest passing grade; below 60% is an F (failing). Individual schools may set different passing thresholds.

Why does my school use different cutoffs? Grading scales vary by institution. This calculator follows the most common standard 10-point scale; check your syllabus for your school's exact thresholds.
