What is this calculator?

The Hours and Minutes to Decimal Calculator converts a time expressed in hours and minutes (for example 8 hours 30 minutes) into a single decimal number such as 8.5. Decimal hours are the standard format used by payroll systems, timesheets, and billing software, because they are far easier to multiply by an hourly rate than mixed hours-and-minutes values.

Clock showing 8 hours 30 minutes converting to 8.5 decimal hours
8 hours and 30 minutes equals 8.5 decimal hours.

How to use it

Enter the number of whole hours and the number of minutes (0–59) into the two fields and the calculator returns the equivalent decimal hours along with the total number of minutes. You can use this for tracking worked time, recording billable hours, or converting durations for spreadsheets.

The formula explained

The conversion is simple: every 60 minutes equals one hour, so a number of minutes is worth that many sixtieths of an hour. The formula is:

$$\text{decimal} = \text{hours} + \frac{\text{minutes}}{60}$$

The fractional part is just the minutes divided by 60, then added to the whole hours.

Diagram of the formula decimal equals hours plus minutes divided by sixty
Decimal hours are found by adding the hours to the minutes divided by 60.

Worked example

Suppose you worked 8 hours and 30 minutes. Divide the minutes by 60: \(30 \div 60 = 0.5\). Add the hours:

$$8 + 0.5 = 8.5 \text{ decimal hours}$$

The total time is \(8 \times 60 + 30 = 510\) minutes.

FAQ

How do I convert 15 minutes to decimal? \(15 \div 60 = 0.25\), so 15 minutes is 0.25 hours.

What is 45 minutes in decimal hours? \(45 \div 60 = 0.75\) hours.

Why use decimal hours for payroll? Multiplying decimal hours by an hourly wage gives pay directly, avoiding errors from mixing hours and minutes.
