What this converter does
The Indian numbering system uses lakhs and crores, while the international system uses millions and billions. This tool bridges the two: enter a value in lakhs or crores and instantly see its equivalent in millions, billions, and the full figure written out in plain digits.
How to use it
Type the number you want to convert, choose whether it is in lakhs or crores, and read off the results. For example, the GDP figures, salaries, property prices, and startup valuations often quoted in crores can be translated into the millions and billions used in global reporting.
The formula explained
The whole conversion rests on the underlying place values. One lakh is 100,000 and one crore is 10,000,000. A million is 1,000,000 and a billion is 1,000,000,000. So:
$$\text{1 lakh} = 100{,}000 \div 1{,}000{,}000 = 0.1 \text{ million}$$
$$\text{1 crore} = 10{,}000{,}000 \div 1{,}000{,}000 = 10 \text{ million}$$
To convert, the tool first turns your input into an absolute number of units, then divides by one million for the million figure and by one billion for the billion figure.
Worked example
Suppose a company is valued at 5 crore. In figures that is $$5 \times 10{,}000{,}000 = 50{,}000{,}000.$$ Dividing by 1,000,000 gives 50 million, and dividing by 1,000,000,000 gives 0.05 billion. The tool also shows it equals 500 lakh.
