What Is the Tie Length Calculator?
A necktie that's the right length should end right at the middle of your belt buckle when tied. Most off-the-rack ties are made around 57 inches, a length designed for someone roughly 5'10" (70 inches) tall. If you're noticeably taller or shorter, that standard tie can end up too short or too long. This calculator scales the standard length to your own height so you know what to look for.
How to Use It
Enter your height in inches and, if you wish, adjust the standard tie length (the default is 57 inches). The calculator multiplies the base length by the ratio of your height to the 70-inch reference and shows the recommended tie length in both inches and centimeters.
The Formula Explained
The model assumes tie length scales linearly with height:
$$\text{Tie Length} = \text{Base Length} \times \frac{\text{Height}}{70}$$
Here 70 inches is the reference height that the standard 57-inch tie is built for. A taller person needs a proportionally longer tie to reach the same point on the torso, and a shorter person needs a shorter one.
Worked Example
Suppose you are 74 inches tall (6'2") and using the standard 57-inch base length. The calculation is: $$57 \times \frac{74}{70} = 57 \times 1.0571 \approx 60.3 \text{ inches}$$ So you'd look for an "extra long" tie of about 60–61 inches rather than a regular 57-inch one.
FAQ
Why 57 inches as the standard? Most regular adult ties fall between 57 and 58 inches, sized for average height around 5'10". We use 57 as the baseline.
I'm very tall — what should I buy? Ties marketed as "XL" or "extra long" are usually 61–63 inches, which suits heights above 6'2".
Does tie knot size matter? Yes. Larger knots (full Windsor) consume more length, so if you favor big knots, lean toward the upper end of the recommended length.
