What Is the Shoelace Length Calculator?
Buying replacement laces is frustrating when they end up too short to tie or so long they drag on the ground. This calculator estimates the ideal shoelace length for your shoes based on how many eyelet pairs they have, how far apart the eyelets sit, the width of the gap your laces cross, and how much length you want left over for tying a comfortable bow. The result is given in both centimeters and inches so you can match it to the sizes sold by lace manufacturers.
How to Use It
Count the number of eyelet pairs on one shoe (a typical sneaker has 5–7). Measure the vertical distance between two stacked eyelets and the horizontal gap between the left and right eyelet rows when the shoe is laced normally. Finally, choose a knot allowance — about 15–25 cm per end gives enough slack for a standard bow. Enter the values and read off the recommended length.
The Formula Explained
The estimate adds up three parts: the criss-cross travel up the shoe, the side-to-side crossings, and the leftover for the knot. Mathematically, $$L = n \times s \times 2 + g \times (n - 1) + 2k$$ where \(n\) is eyelet pairs, \(s\) is vertical spacing, \(g\) is the width gap, and \(k\) is knot allowance per end. Multiplying spacing by two accounts for the diagonal zig-zag pattern, and \((n - 1)\) counts the crossings between pairs.
Worked Example
For a shoe with 6 eyelet pairs, 2.5 cm vertical spacing, a 7 cm width gap, and 20 cm knot allowance: $$L = 6 \times 2.5 \times 2 + 7 \times (6 - 1) + 2 \times 20 = 30 + 35 + 40 = 105 \text{ cm}$$ which is about 41.3 inches.
FAQ
Why is my result longer than the laces I have now? Many factory laces are minimal. The knot allowance assumes a generous bow; lower it if you prefer shorter ends.
Does lacing style matter? Yes. This uses a standard criss-cross. Decorative patterns (ladder, straight bar) can need more or less length.
What lace size should I buy? Round up to the nearest standard size offered (commonly 75, 90, 114, 137 cm), since you can shorten a bow but not lengthen a lace.
