What This Calculator Does
This tool estimates the sales tax on a vehicle purchase in the United States. Sales tax rules vary by state, county, and city, so you supply your combined state + local rate and the calculator applies it to the correct taxable base. It also shows your total out-the-door cost. Rules and rates change frequently — verify with your state DMV or department of revenue before signing.
How to Use It
Enter the vehicle's purchase price, the value of any trade-in, and any cash rebate or dealer incentive. Type your combined sales tax rate as a percentage (for example 7.5). Finally, choose whether your state deducts the trade-in value before calculating tax — most states do (such as Texas and Florida), but a few (like California and Virginia) tax the full price.
The Formula Explained
When the trade-in is deductible, the taxable amount is price − trade-in − rebate. The sales tax is that amount multiplied by your rate. Your total cost is the net price (price minus trade-in and rebate) plus the tax. If your state does not allow a trade-in deduction, the trade-in is excluded from the taxable amount and tax is charged on the full price (minus rebate where applicable).
$$\begin{gathered} \text{Sales Tax} = \left(\text{Price} - \text{Trade-In} - \text{Rebate}\right) \times \frac{\text{Tax Rate}}{100} \\[1.5em] \text{Total Cost} = \text{Price} - \text{Trade-In} - \text{Rebate} + \text{Sales Tax} \end{gathered}$$
Worked Example
A $30,000 car with a $5,000 trade-in, no rebate, and a 7.5% rate in a trade-in-deductible state: taxable amount = \(30{,}000 - 5{,}000 = \$25{,}000\). Tax = \(25{,}000 \times 0.075 =\) $1,875. Total cost = \((30{,}000 - 5{,}000) + 1{,}875 =\) $26,875.
FAQ
Does a trade-in lower my tax? In most states, yes — you only pay tax on the difference between price and trade-in.
Are manufacturer rebates taxable? It depends on the state. Some tax the price before the rebate, others after. This calculator assumes the rebate reduces the taxable amount.
What rate should I enter? Use the combined state + county + city rate for the address where the vehicle is registered, not where it's purchased.
