What is the 4-7-8 Breathing Technique?

The 4-7-8 breathing method, popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, is a simple relaxation exercise rooted in pranayama yoga breathing. Each cycle consists of inhaling through the nose for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling slowly through the mouth for 8 seconds. This calculator tells you exactly how long a full session will take based on the number of cycles you plan to do.

One 4-7-8 cycle: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the number of breathing cycles you want to complete. The default inhale, hold, and exhale durations are pre-filled with the classic 4, 7, and 8 seconds, but you can adjust them if you follow a modified pattern. The calculator returns the total session length in seconds and minutes, plus the seconds-per-cycle figure.

The Formula Explained

One full cycle lasts the sum of the three phases: \(4 + 7 + 8 = 19\) seconds. To find the total session time, multiply this cycle length by the number of cycles:

$$\text{Total} = \text{Cycles} \times 19$$

For custom patterns, the cycle length simply becomes Inhale + Hold + Exhale.

Each cycle totals 19 seconds; multiply by the number of cycles for the session length.

Worked Example

Suppose you do 4 cycles of standard 4-7-8 breathing. Each cycle is \(4 + 7 + 8 = 19\) seconds. The total session is

$$4 \times 19 = 76 \text{ seconds}$$

or about 1.27 minutes. Many beginners start with 4 cycles, working up to 8 cycles (152 seconds) over time.

FAQ

How many cycles should I do? Beginners typically start with 4 cycles, twice a day. With practice you can extend to 8 cycles per session.

Is 4-7-8 breathing safe? It is generally safe for most people, but if you feel lightheaded, reduce the breath-hold or stop. Consult a doctor if you have a respiratory condition.

Can I change the timing? Yes — the calculator lets you adjust the inhale, hold, and exhale seconds to match any custom breathing ratio.
