What is the Germany VAT (MwSt) Calculator?
This tool applies to Germany and uses the current German value-added tax (Mehrwertsteuer, MwSt) rates: the standard rate of 19% and the reduced rate of 7% (for food, books, public transport and similar goods). It lets you either add VAT to a net (netto) price or remove VAT from a gross (brutto) price, showing the net amount, the VAT, and the gross total.
How to use it
Choose a direction: Add VAT if you have a net price and want the gross price, or Remove VAT if you have a gross price and want to extract the net and VAT portions. Enter the amount in euros, pick the 19% or 7% rate, and read the breakdown instantly.
The formula explained
To add VAT, multiply the net amount by (1 + rate): \(\text{gross} = \text{net} \times (1 + \text{rate})\), and the VAT is \(\text{net} \times \text{rate}\). To remove VAT from a gross figure, divide it back out: \(\text{net} = \text{gross} \div (1 + \text{rate})\), then \(\text{VAT} = \text{gross} - \text{net}\). The rate is 0.19 for the standard rate or 0.07 for the reduced rate.
Worked example
You have a net price of €100 at the standard 19% rate. VAT = \(100 \times 0.19 = €19.00\), so the gross price = €119.00. Working backwards: if a product costs €119 gross, the net is \(119 \div 1.19 = €100.00\) and the VAT is €19.00 — confirming the math.
FAQ
Which rate should I use? Most goods and services use 19%. The reduced 7% rate applies to most foods, books, newspapers, plants and local public transport.
Is the gross price what the customer pays? Yes — the gross (brutto) price is the final price including MwSt that consumers pay at the till.
Are these rates current? The figures reflect Germany's standard 19% and reduced 7% rates. Always confirm against the latest official guidance for special cases.
