What Is the Lumens Needed Calculator?

A lumen is a measure of the total visible light a bulb produces. This calculator tells you the total lumens you need to comfortably and safely light a room based on its floor area and how the space is used. Brighter tasks—like cooking or detailed work—require more light than relaxing in a bedroom.

How to Use It

The calculator multiplies your floor area by that level to give the total lumens you should aim for across all fixtures in the room.

The Formula Explained

The core equation is simply $$\text{Lumens} = \text{Area} \times \text{Foot-candles}$$ Area is length \(\times\) width in square feet. Foot-candles is a lighting-industry target: roughly 10–20 for bedrooms, 30 for dining rooms, 40 for kitchens, 50 for bathrooms and offices, and 70 for workshops. Add the lumen ratings of all your bulbs to compare against this target.

Worked Example

Say you have a 12 ft \(\times\) 12 ft living room. The floor area is 144 ft². A living room targets about 20 foot-candles, so you need $$144 \times 20 = 2{,}880 \text{ lumens}$$ That could be a single 2,800-lumen fixture or several smaller bulbs adding up to about 2,880 lumens.

FAQ

How many lumens is a 60W bulb? A traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces around 800 lumens. So the 2,880-lumen example above needs roughly three to four such bulbs.

Can I have too many lumens? Yes—excessive brightness causes glare and discomfort. Use dimmable fixtures so you can adjust to the recommended level.

Does ceiling height matter? These foot-candle targets assume standard 8-foot ceilings. For higher ceilings, increase lumens by about 10–20% per extra few feet.
