What Is the Payment to Reach Target Utilization Calculator?
Credit utilization — the share of your available credit you're using — is one of the biggest factors in your credit score. This calculator tells you exactly how much you need to pay down on a credit card to bring your utilization to a specific target, such as the widely recommended 30% or the score-optimizing 10%.
How to Use It
Enter your current balance, your card's credit limit, and the utilization percentage you want to reach. The calculator returns the dollar payment required, the balance you'll have after paying, and your current utilization for reference. If your balance is already at or below the target, the payment shown is $0.
The Formula Explained
The math is straightforward. First find your target balance: multiply the credit limit by the target utilization (as a decimal). Then subtract that target balance from your current balance to get the payment:
$$\text{Payment} = \max\!\left(0,\; \text{Balance} - \frac{\text{Target Util (\%)}}{100} \times \text{Credit Limit}\right)$$
For example, a target of 10% on a $10,000 limit means a target balance of $1,000. If you owe $3,000, you'd need to pay \(\$3{,}000 - \$1{,}000 = \$2{,}000\).
Worked Example
Suppose you have a $5,000 balance on a card with a $20,000 limit and you want 30% utilization. Target balance = \(0.30 \times \$20{,}000 = \$6{,}000\). Since your balance ($5,000) is already below $6,000, the required payment is $0 — you're already under target.
FAQ
What utilization should I aim for? Under 30% is the common guideline, but keeping it under 10% tends to maximize your score.
Should I use overall or per-card utilization? Both matter. This tool calculates per-card; repeat it for each card or use your combined balance and combined limit for overall utilization.
When should I pay to lower utilization? Pay before your statement closing date, since that's the balance most issuers report to the credit bureaus.
