What is the Percentage to CGPA Calculator?

This calculator converts a marks percentage into a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10-point scale. It uses the widely adopted CBSE conversion method, where CGPA is obtained by dividing the percentage by 9.5. The 9.5 factor comes from the observation that, across a large sample of students, the average marks of subjects falling in a given grade point band closely match 9.5 times that grade point. It is commonly used in India for school and many university results.

How to use it

Enter your overall percentage (0–100) and the calculator instantly returns the equivalent CGPA. For example, a student scoring 76% would have a CGPA of \(76 \div 9.5 = 8.0\). You can use the result for applications, comparisons, or simply to understand how your marks map onto the grade-point scale.

The formula explained

The conversion is a simple proportional relationship:

$$\text{CGPA} = \frac{\text{Percentage (\%)}}{9.5}$$

Because the factor is fixed, the relationship is linear — every 9.5 percentage points equals one full grade point. A perfect 95% maps to a 10.0 CGPA, the maximum on the scale.

Worked example

Suppose your percentage is 85.5%. Then $$\text{CGPA} = 85.5 \div 9.5 = 9.0$$ So an 85.5% score corresponds to a CGPA of 9.0 on the 10-point scale.

FAQ

Is this the official method? The \(\div 9.5\) rule is the standard CBSE approximation. Individual institutions may use slightly different scales, so check your school's guidelines.

Can CGPA exceed 10? Only if the percentage exceeds 95%. A 100% score gives roughly 10.53, which most boards cap at 10.0.

How do I convert CGPA back to percentage? Multiply the CGPA by 9.5: \(\text{Percentage} = \text{CGPA} \times 9.5\).
