What Is the CGPA to Percentage Calculator?

This tool converts a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) on a 10-point scale into an equivalent percentage. It uses the widely accepted formula popularized by India's CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education): \(\text{Percentage} = \text{CGPA} \times 9.5\). The conversion is commonly used by Indian schools, universities, and students applying for jobs or higher studies that require marks expressed as a percentage.

How to Use It

Enter your overall CGPA (any value from 0 to 10) into the input box and the calculator instantly shows the equivalent percentage. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 maps to a percentage you can quote on application forms, resumes, or admission portals.

The Formula Explained

The multiplier 9.5 was derived by CBSE from the average performance of students over several years: the average of the upper and lower marks of each grade band, divided across the 5-point gap, produced roughly 9.5. So each grade point on the 10-point scale is treated as equal to 9.5 percentage points. This gives a simple linear relationship: a perfect 10 CGPA equals 95%, while a 6.0 CGPA equals 57%.

$$\text{Percentage} = \text{CGPA} \times 9.5$$

Worked Example

Suppose your CGPA is 8.4. Multiply by 9.5: \(8.4 \times 9.5 = 79.8\). So your equivalent percentage is 79.8%. Similarly, a CGPA of 9.2 gives \(9.2 \times 9.5 = 87.4\%\).

$$8.4 \times 9.5 = 79.8$$

Every CGPA point on the 10-point scale corresponds to 9.5 percent.

FAQ

Is CGPA × 9.5 official? Yes, it is the CBSE-recommended formula for converting overall CGPA to percentage and is accepted by most Indian institutions.

Does it work for individual subjects? CBSE recommends using 9.5 for the overall CGPA. For a single subject's grade point you can use the same multiplier as an estimate.

Why can't I get above 95%? Since the maximum CGPA is 10, the maximum percentage from this formula is \(10 \times 9.5 = 95\%\).
