What is the Commute Cost Calculator?
The Commute Cost Calculator estimates how much you spend on fuel getting to and from work each year. By combining your one-way distance, how many days you commute, the price of fuel, and your vehicle's fuel efficiency, it reveals the true running cost of your daily drive — a number that is easy to underestimate.
How to use it
Enter the one-way distance to your workplace in miles, the number of days you commute per year (often around 220–260 for full-time work), the current fuel price per gallon, and your car's fuel economy in miles per gallon (MPG). The calculator doubles the distance to account for the round trip and returns your annual, monthly, and daily fuel cost, plus total miles and gallons used.
The formula explained
The core equation is $$\text{Annual Cost} = \frac{2 \times \text{Distance (mi)} \times \text{Days/Year}}{\text{Efficiency (mpg)}} \times \text{Price (\$/gal)}$$ Multiplying distance by 2 turns a one-way figure into a round trip. Dividing fuel price by MPG gives the cost per mile, which is then scaled across all the miles you drive in a year.
Worked example
Suppose you drive 15 miles each way, commute 250 days a year, fuel costs $3.50 per gallon, and your car gets 25 MPG. Round-trip distance is 30 miles. Annual miles = \(30 \times 250 = 7{,}500\). Gallons used = \(7{,}500 \div 25 = 300\). Annual cost = $$300 \times \$3.50 = \$1{,}050,$$ or about $87.50 per month.
