What is the kW to HP Calculator?

This tool converts power measured in kilowatts (kW) into mechanical horsepower (hp). Kilowatts are the SI unit of power, while horsepower is a traditional unit still widely used to rate car engines, motors, pumps, and generators. Converting between them lets you compare equipment specs from different regions and standards.

How to use it

Enter the power value in kilowatts and the calculator returns the equivalent mechanical (imperial) horsepower. This conversion uses the mechanical horsepower definition (1 hp = 745.7 watts = 0.7457 kW), which is the standard used for automotive and engineering power ratings in most English-speaking countries.

The formula explained

The conversion is simply $$\text{HP} = \frac{\text{kW}}{0.7457}$$ Because one horsepower is defined as 0.7457 kilowatts, dividing the kilowatt figure by 0.7457 yields the horsepower. To reverse the calculation, multiply horsepower by 0.7457 to get kilowatts.

Worked example

A car engine rated at 150 kW: $$\text{HP} = \frac{150}{0.7457} = 201.15 \text{ hp}$$ So a 150 kW motor produces roughly 201 horsepower.

FAQ

Is this metric or mechanical horsepower? This calculator uses mechanical (imperial) horsepower. Metric horsepower (PS) is slightly different, where \(1 \text{ PS} = 0.7355 \text{ kW}\).

How do I convert hp back to kW? Multiply the horsepower value by 0.7457.

Why is 1 hp 0.7457 kW? Mechanical horsepower was historically defined as 550 foot-pounds per second, which works out to about 745.7 watts.
