What This Calculator Does
The Rectangle Area in Acres Calculator turns the dimensions of a rectangular piece of land into its area in acres. Enter the length and width in feet and it computes the total square footage, then converts that figure to acres. It's ideal for landowners, real-estate buyers, farmers, surveyors, and anyone sizing up a lot, field, or building footprint.
How to Use It
Measure the two sides of your rectangular plot in feet. Type the longer side into the Length field and the shorter side into the Width field (order does not matter for area). Press calculate, and the tool shows both the area in square feet and the equivalent in acres.
The Formula Explained
An acre is defined as exactly 43,560 square feet. To find the acreage of a rectangle you first compute its area as length × width (in feet), giving square feet, and then divide by 43,560:
$$\text{acres} = \frac{L_{\text{ft}} \times W_{\text{ft}}}{43{,}560}$$
Because the units cancel cleanly, this works for any rectangular shape regardless of size.
Worked Example
Suppose a plot measures 300 feet long and 200 feet wide. The area is \(300 \times 200 = 60{,}000\) square feet. Dividing by 43,560 gives $$\frac{60{,}000}{43{,}560} \approx 1.3774 \text{ acres}.$$ So the plot is just under 1.4 acres.
FAQ
Why 43,560 square feet per acre? The acre originates from historical land measurement (one chain by one furlong); \(1 \text{ acre} = 43{,}560 \text{ sq ft}\) by definition.
Can I use it for non-rectangular land? This tool assumes a rectangle. For irregular shapes, divide the area into rectangles and add the acreages.
How do I convert acres to square feet? Multiply acres by 43,560. For example, \(2 \text{ acres} = 87{,}120 \text{ sq ft}\).
