What this calculator does

The Dog Flea & Tick Medication Weight-Band Calculator matches your dog's body weight to the standard dose band used by most popular chewable and spot-on flea & tick products. Many medications are sold in fixed strength tiers (extra small, small, medium, large, extra large), and giving the wrong tier can mean an underdose that doesn't protect your pet — or an overdose. This tool removes the guesswork by sorting your dog's weight into the correct band.

How to use it

Enter your dog's current weight and choose pounds or kilograms. The calculator converts the value to pounds, finds the matching weight band, and shows the recommended dose-size color tier. It also reports the band number and the weight expressed in both units so you can cross-check against any product label.

The weight bands

The standard bands are: under 4.4 lb, 4.4–10 lb, 10.1–22 lb, 22.1–44 lb, 44.1–88 lb, and 88.1–132 lb. Dogs over 132 lb usually require a combination of chews. Kilogram inputs are converted with \(\text{lb} = \text{kg} \times 2.20462\) before the band is selected.

$$\text{Band} = \begin{cases} \text{XS (orange)} & 4.4 \le W_{lb} \le 10 \\ \text{Small (green)} & 10 < W_{lb} \le 22 \\ \text{Medium (blue)} & 22 < W_{lb} \le 44 \\ \text{Large (red)} & 44 < W_{lb} \le 88 \\ \text{XL (purple)} & 88 < W_{lb} \le 132 \end{cases} \quad W_{lb}=\text{Weight (lb)}$$
Weight axis split into colored bands each matched to a dog size and a colored chewable tablet
Each weight band maps to one dose size of flea & tick chew.

Worked example

A 25 lb dog falls between 22.1 and 44 lb, so it lands in band 4, the "Medium (blue)" dose. A 9 kg dog converts to about 19.8 lb, placing it in band 3, the "Small (green)" dose.

$$9 \text{ kg} \times 2.20462 \approx 19.8 \text{ lb}$$

FAQ

Is this product-specific? No. The bands reflect the common industry pattern, but exact cut-offs vary slightly by brand. Always read the package label.

My dog is right on a boundary — which band? When a dog's weight sits at the edge of two bands, ask your veterinarian; they may prefer the higher band for reliable coverage.

Can I split a larger chew? Generally no — many flea & tick chews are not designed to be split. Use the correct single-size dose or combine full chews only as directed.
