What is the GRE Score Calculator?
The GRE General Test reports two scaled scores that matter most to admissions: Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Each is reported on a scale from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments. This calculator simply combines them into your total GRE score, which therefore ranges from 260 to 340. (Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0–6 and is not part of the 260–340 total.)
How to use it
Enter your scaled Verbal Reasoning score and your scaled Quantitative Reasoning score, each between 130 and 170. The calculator adds them to produce your total and shows where that total falls within the 260–340 band. Values outside the valid range are clamped automatically.
The formula explained
The math is intentionally simple because ETS already converts your raw number of correct answers into scaled section scores using a process called equating, which adjusts for slight differences in test difficulty. Once you have those scaled scores, the total is:
$$\text{Total} = \text{Verbal} + \text{Quant}$$
To see your standing within the range, the band position is computed as $$\text{Band \%} = \frac{\left(\text{Verbal} + \text{Quant}\right) - 260}{80} \times 100$$
Worked example
Suppose you scored 155 on Verbal and 162 on Quant. Your total is $$155 + 162 = 317$$ Your position in the band is $$\frac{317 - 260}{80} \times 100 = 71.25\%$$ meaning you are about 71% of the way to a perfect 340.
FAQ
Does this include Analytical Writing? No. AWA is scored 0–6 in half-point steps and is reported separately, not folded into the 260–340 total.
What is a good total GRE score? It depends on your program, but many competitive graduate programs look for totals of 320+ (roughly 160 on each section), while top quantitative programs often expect a high Quant score specifically.
Can the total be below 260? No. Because each section has a floor of 130, the minimum possible total is 260 and the maximum is 340.
