What Is the New York Sales Tax Calculator?
This calculator (for the United States — New York State) works out how much sales tax you pay on a purchase and the final total. New York has a statewide base sales tax of 4%, plus county and city taxes and, in some areas, a Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) surcharge. In New York City the combined rate is 8.875%, which is the default used here. Rates vary by county, so you can change the rate to match your location.
How to Use It
Enter the pre-tax item price and the sales tax rate as a percentage. The calculator returns the sales tax amount and the total price including tax. If you are shopping in New York City, leave the rate at 8.875%; for other counties, enter the correct combined rate (commonly 7% to 8.875%).
The Formula Explained
The rate percentage is converted to a decimal by dividing by 100. Sales tax is then the price multiplied by that decimal rate, and the total is the price plus tax:
$$\text{Tax} = \text{Price} \times \frac{\text{rate}}{100}$$
$$\text{Total} = \text{Price} + \text{Tax} = \text{Price} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{rate}}{100}\right)$$
Worked Example
Buying a $100 item in New York City at 8.875%: \(\text{Tax} = 100 \times 0.08875 = \mathbf{\$8.88}\), and $$\text{Total} = 100 + 8.88 = \$108.88$$
