What is the Rabbit Cage Size Calculator?
This tool estimates how much space your rabbit needs to stay healthy and active. Rabbits require room to stretch out, hop a few steps, and stand up on their hind legs. A cage that is too small can cause obesity, sore hocks, and stress. The calculator gives you two numbers: an absolute minimum cage area based on your rabbit's body size, and a more generous recommended floor area that animal-welfare guidelines suggest.
How to use it
Measure your rabbit stretched out from nose to tail (its "stretched length") and across the body (its "width") in inches. Enter both values and the number of rabbits you plan to house together. The calculator returns the minimum cage area in both square inches and square feet, plus the recommended floor area in square feet.
The formula explained
The minimum enclosure should be at least four times the footprint of one stretched-out rabbit, so $$\text{Min Area (sq in)} = 4 \times \text{Length (in)} \times \text{Width (in)} \times \text{Rabbits}$$. To convert square inches to square feet we divide by 144. The recommended floor area follows a common rule of thumb: about 12 square feet for a single rabbit, increasing by 3 square feet for each additional rabbit sharing the space: $$\text{Rec Area (sq ft)} = 12 + 3 \times \left( \text{Rabbits} - 1 \right)$$
Worked example
A medium rabbit measures 18 in stretched and 9 in wide. The footprint is \(18 \times 9 = 162\) sq in. Four times that is 648 sq in per rabbit, which equals \(648 \div 144 = 4.5\) sq ft. For one rabbit the recommended floor area is 12 sq ft — comfortably above the bare minimum, giving room for a litter box, hay, and toys.
FAQ
Is the minimum area enough on its own? No. The minimum is the absolute floor; always aim for the recommended area or more, plus daily exercise time outside the cage.
Does cage height matter? Yes — rabbits should be able to stand fully upright on their back legs, usually needing at least 18–24 inches of height, which this tool does not score.
Can two rabbits share a cage? Bonded pairs can, but give them extra space; this calculator adds floor area for each additional rabbit.
