Bonus-point rules vary by competition; this tool uses the common 4-try and 7-point losing-margin scheme.

What this calculator does

Rugby union scoring follows the international World Rugby standard, so the point values used here are universal. This tool adds up each team's match score from the five scoring actions and then works out competition (league) points using the common bonus-point system: a try bonus for scoring four or more tries and a losing bonus for losing by seven points or fewer. Note that bonus-point rules differ between competitions, so treat the league points as the widely used "4-try / 7-point" scheme rather than a single global rule.

Point values

A try is worth 5 points, a conversion goal 2 points, a penalty goal 3 points, a drop goal 3 points, and a penalty try 7 points. A penalty try is awarded when the referee judges a try would probably have been scored but for foul play, and no conversion is taken because the full 7 points are already given.

How to use it

Enter how many of each scoring action each team made. Blank fields and negatives are treated as zero. The calculator returns each team's total score, the match result, the total number of tries (including penalty tries, used for the try-bonus check), and each team's league points.

The formula explained

For each team, $$\text{Score} = 5\times\text{tries} + 2\times\text{conversions} + 3\times\text{penalty goals} + 3\times\text{drop goals} + 7\times\text{penalty tries}.$$ The team with the higher score wins. League points start from the result: win = 4, draw = 2, loss = 0. Add +1 if the team scored four or more tries, and add +1 to the loser if the margin was seven points or fewer. A winning or drawing team never gets a losing bonus.

The total score is the sum of each action multiplied by its points.

Worked example

Team A scores 4 tries, 2 conversions and 2 penalty goals: $$5\times4 + 2\times2 + 3\times2 = 30.$$ Team B scores 1 try, 1 conversion and 1 penalty goal: $$5 + 2 + 3 = 10.$$ Team A wins 30–10. Team A has 4 tries, earning a try bonus, so league points = \(4 + 1 = 5\). Team B has no bonus and lost by more than 7, so its league points = 0.

FAQ

Does a penalty try count toward the try bonus? Yes. This tool adds penalty tries to ordinary tries when checking for four or more tries.

Can a losing team earn two league points? Yes — a team that loses by seven or fewer points and also scores four-plus tries gets a losing bonus and a try bonus, totalling 2 points.

Do drawing teams get a losing bonus? No. On a draw both teams take 2 base points and may earn a try bonus, but neither gets a losing bonus.
